Bruggemeyer Memorial Library

This City of Monterey Park project included the renovation and modernization of the City’s public library originally built in 1959. The first floor includes both adult and young adult sections, the international reference collection, a technical services area, and main service points. New construction included the addition of a second floor that features the children’s library, assembly spaces, adult literacy program facilities, and specialized staff areas. Project also featured the construction of a subterranean parking structure to increase parking accommodations for visitors and staff.

The project’s design incorporated a major re-organization of interior spaces to clarify circulation and efficiency throughout the entire building. A spine connecting the second floor service point to the main stairway/reference service point on the first floor restructured the use of interior space. The integrated surface treatments applied to this project were selected to be compatible with the original 1950’s building, while projecting an image of a new 21st century library. FTR is highly competent in facilitating simultaneous construction renovation and expansion on existing buildings, and considers structural renovation an important asset to sustainable construction practices and green building.
