The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage
The Broad Stage and Edye Second Space is an innovative performing arts complex that has received significant industry acclaim for its challenging engineering and construction features. The project was awarded “Project of the Year” in Higher Education from California Construction Magazine, taking top honors in the ‘Best of 2007’ series.
Formerly called the New Music and Performing Arts – Madison Theater, The Broad Stage and Edye Second Space consists of a 499-seat state-of-the-art performance theater and a 99-seat experimental black box theater. Additional program features include 2,025 square feet of rehearsal rooms, four dressing rooms, classrooms and practice facilities, an orchestra lift, technologically advanced sound and performance lighting systems, and auxiliary support spaces housed in a contemporary 70-foot stepped building.
The non-orthogonal cutting edge design includes a complex multi-tiered plan, making the implementation of the various construction phases extremely challenging. Unconventionally shaped metal stud framing constructs the reflector walls that facilitate the acoustic excellence of the theater. The sophisticated sound and performance lighting systems are accompanied by two lighting bridges and a full fly space supported by 37 lines of counterweight rigging. Approximately 300 parking spaces compliment the 52,000 square foot structure.
